GARDEN ROUTE ACTIVITIES

Along the Garden Route there is no shortage of nature excusions. Below are some recommended activities:

TENIKWA WILDLIFE AWARENESS CENTRE

This is the most highly recommended activity in this area. It offers daily programs such as the Wild Cat Experience where you are guaranteed to see African Wild Cats, Black Footed Cats, Serval, Caracal, Cheetah and Leopard. Also popular Cheetah Walks, where you have the opportunity to join the Tenikwa Cheetahs on their daily walks through fynbos and forest. The centre also has a Meerkat Meander where you can watch an active mob of Meerkats busy reshaping their world. Enjoy a cup of coffee and toasties at Chesters Coffee Shop where you can sit and watch the fascinating Marabou Storks, Earl and Edwina, play with a group of graceful Blue Cranes.

MONKEYLAND – THE CRAGS

Monkeyland has captured the hearts of visitors in its efforts to rehabilitate and free previously caged primates. The sanctuary is exceptional as it caters for several species of primates which are free to move about the forest. Safaris, which are conducted by multi-lingual game rangers, are fun, exciting and educational.

BIRDS OF EDEN – THE CRAGS

This is the world’s largest bird sanctuary spanning 2 hectares beneath the Tsitsikamma Forest. It is situated right next to Monkeyland.

TSITSIKAMMA NATIONAL PARK AND STORMS RIVER MOUTH

Tsitsikamma, which means “the place of abundant waters’” in the Khoikhoi language, is a 2,561 hectare coastal park which includes forested valleys of the Groot River and the Salt River. This is a leisure seekers heaven, with lovely beaches to enjoy and many hiking trails to choose from. There is also a restaurant in the park where one can stop and enjoy lunch.

FEATHERBEDS NATURE EXPERIENCE

This 25 minute ferry cruise will take you to the privately owned nature reserve on the western head of the Knysna lagoon. Upon arrival at the reserve, you can take a 4x4 unimog drive to enjoy the panoramic views at the top of the western end. There is an optional downhill walk back to the ferry. A wonderful nature excursion!

KNYSNA ELEPHANT PARK

Get up-close-and-personal with African elephants at Knysna Elephant Park. Feed and ride these magnificent creatures.

BLOUKRANS BRIDGE – BUNGY JUMP

The highest commercially operating bungy jump in the world - 216m! Bloukrans uses pendulum bungy technology, ensuring you the smoothest and most comfortable jump possible.

OYSTER TASTING

Visit an oyster plant and taste the scrumptious Knysna oysters.

GOLF ON THE GARDEN ROUTE

There are many top signature golf courses in this area, these include:

PEZULA – Knysna The Pezula Championship Golf Course is perched above the Indian Ocean and the Knysna lagoon. It is a sweeping spectacle of fairways and greens rolling through the pristine southern cape landscape. This is the ultimate in golfing luxury. The estate offers a number of additional activities for everyone including fantastic spa experiences. If staying at this ultra luxurious resort, ensure that you go to Knoetsie to have lunch at the breathtakingly beautiful seaside castle.

SIMOLA - Knysna Situated on the Garden Route, 15 minutes drive from Knysna, Simola Golf & Country Estate occupies one of the most beautiful tracts of countryside on the Garden Route. This Jack Nicklaus signature golf course offers perfect golfing conditions, free of wind despite the high vantage point.

FANCOURT – George (63 km from Knysna) The Fancourt, boasting 4 courses, is situated George – the golfing Mecca of South Africa. The Outeniqua Course at Fancourt took shape under master golfer Gary Player, offering world class conditioning and a setting that takes in mountains, water and wildlife. There is also The Links Course at Fancourt. This green moonscape is a masterpiece of a course which was proud host to the Presidents Cup in 2003. OUBAAI – Garden Route This Links style course situated on the beautiful Garden Route of the Southern Cape is Ernie Els’ first signature golf course in South Africa. Located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Outeniqua mountains, Oubaai Golf Club & Estate is not far from the beautiful town of George.
